How do you support your body as you move through your life?
Most of us never give our body a second thought — until it “gives out”, “gets stiff”, “gets old”, or “breaks down”.
Is this the way it’s supposed to be? Are we destined to deteriorate throughout or lives until we’re BROKEN, relying on pills and band-aids to get us through the day…and night?
Gravity can ultimately lead to our physical demise, if we allow it to overcome our natural structure — or it can be our ultimate training partner, providing us with the exact amount of resistance we need to develop supported posture and movement.
Thinking of gravity as the “enemy”, and we its “victims” is counter-productive. Gravity is, after all, what keeps us on the earth and prevents us from floating off into space. Gravity can provide us with appropriate feedback about our state of being, our posture, alignment and movement. The earth’s gravity is exactly right for all the species on our planet – not too much, not too little.
Our alignment, posture and movement starts on the inside, in every cell of our body, and with every thought that we have. We are in a constant dance, balancing and adjusting to the field that surrounds us. If we pay no attention to this fact, gravity will most certainly have its way with us.
But if we mindfully work with gravity, we will remain strong, flexible, healthy and youthful.
Pilates is one way to work with gravity, if you practice Pilates with awareness, and embody the way your were designed. The Franklin Method adds a critical sub-text to the dialogue between your body and mind, allowing you to “see” yourself from the inside-out so you can make healthy, positive, changes to your alignment and movement.
At Park Meadows Pilates & Physical Therapy, we combine both techniques to give you new insights into your design, providing you with options for supporting yourself from the inside-out.
So — do you exactly match gravity from within as you go about your day, or do you let gravity “win”?
Leave me a comment about your experience with “gravity”.
